Colours and coatings
The properties of a PVDF coating are to a large extent determined by the amount of Polyvinylidene difluoride. A PVDF coating contains at least 70 to 80% polyvinylidene difluoride.
The PVDF coatings are supplied in a standard layer thickness of 25μm. The PVDF coatings are elastically and mechanically strong and thus guarantee a long-lasting great look. It is also resistant to solvents, chemicals and UV radiation.
This coating is often chosen for facade cladding where colour retention is important.
The Colorcoat PVDF is, for example, supplied as standard in a layer thickness of 25μm, while the other side is equipped with a backcoat approximately 10-15μm thick in a light colour. Guarantees are limited and only for use as exterior facade. PVDF is available as standard in uni colours and metallics.
PVDF is a common coating in roof and facade systems and, over the years, its quality has been increasingly enhanced. Van Heemskerk is an expert in coatings and knows how to professionally repair damage to PVDF coatings.
SP Silicon Polyester
SP, often referred to as silicone polyester, is a smooth glossy coating based on polyester resin with a thickness 25 µm. This coating is suitable for roof- and facade cladding in a non-aggressive outside environment. PE 25 / Polyester consists of a MagiZinc substrate with a smooth coating based on polyester, that is only suitable for use on facades in non-aggressive outside environments. The other side is usually equipped with a light-coloured backcoat that is approximately 10μm thick.
SP is the coating system that is frequently used, especially in the early years of pre-painted steel, with guarantee periods of approximately 5-10 years. In the meantime, many building shells with this type of systems have become obsolete and their guarantees have expired a long time ago. This coating system has, for a long time, been subject to stiff competition from the high-quality PU coatings / PVC coatings.
Van Heemskerk repairs everyday damage to polyester coatings and knows how to expertly repair these types of coatings.
PU Polyurethane coatings
Polyurethane, often referred to as PU, is a coating that is currently commonly used in the roof and facade sector. This is partly due to the strong properties of the polyurethane, such as scratch resistance (i.e. hard), optimal colour retention, nice shine, stone chip resistance (flexible) and extremely long guarantee periods (up to 40 years). PU is often produced on coated steel in a thickness of 50μm
In the 60’s, Polyurethane or PU finishes were developed for the industry. The large compression strength and tensile strength and liquid density of the material were key factors in heavy industry. Since the turn of the millennium, the product application has shifted to the aesthetic market. Suppliers of PU coatings include:
- Kingspan Spectrum
- Tatasteel Prisma

HPS, often referred to as plastisol, is a frequently used coating, ever since the early years. This is partly due to the strong properties of the PVC, such as a very high scratch resistance (i.e. hard) so minimal assembly damage, optimal colour retention, nice shine, extremely flexible and very long guarantee periods (up to 40 years). Is also frequently used in maritime environments. The surface has a lightly embossed finish, leather pattern or the well-known ''s'' from corus (scintella pattern).
HPS is produced on coated steel in a thickness of 200μm (thickness in mm = 0.2mm)
Van Heemskerk repairs everyday damage to HP / HPS coatings and knows how to expertly repair these types of coatings.
