The edge ends of the roof panel are relatively unprotected due to the factory cutting, as they only have a zinc layer, which provides some level of cathodic protection to a certain extent. After the zinc sacrifices itself to the steel, problems can still arise in the long term.

In 90% of cases, edge peeling occurs on the roof where the roofing overlaps at the gutter detail or at overlaps/joints. This is where dirt accumulation is most prevalent. Additionally, due to UV radiation, these areas will show defects more quickly. Timely maintenance is necessary, which is usually also included in the warranty conditions by the supplier.

You risk that edge peeling will affect your cladding to such an extent that leaks will occur. Due to the capillary action of water (rising water), the problem will worsen. Without the right treatment, edge peeling will also lead to large areas of delamination (large loose pieces of coating, see delamination). In many cases, replacement of the cladding or the application of a new coating will be necessary.

Installing a cover cap is definitely beneficial; the edges are no longer directly exposed to UV radiation, which significantly slows down the deterioration process. Additionally, this cap provides a clean appearance and ensures that quickly flowing water or snow accumulation is properly channeled into the gutter. However, this cap is often only feasible at the gutter detail.

Through proper and periodic maintenance, edge peeling can often be limited. Despite the long warranty claims from coating manufacturers, edge peeling still often occurs depending on environmental factors. During the installation of the cladding, the ends can also be treated preventively by the supplier.
