Repair of Delamination and Peeling Coating

Delamination is, as you probably know, the peeling away of a laminated layer. This often occurs with older (Plastisol) cladding or panels on roofs and facades. Facades that are exposed to the sun are often the most affected. UV radiation gradually depletes the plasticizers from the PVC coatings, making them sensitive to dirt and causing them to harden. Over time, rain, wind, and other weather influences cause the coating to loosen.

It usually starts with a small area, and then it spreads. Eventually, the layer completely comes off and breaks into small pieces that scatter in the surrounding area. This is inconvenient for neighbors, unpleasant for the environment, and not aesthetically pleasing or beneficial for your building.

Van Heemskerk has developed its own successful repair method for this issue. This method is now being followed by other damage repair companies. As the pioneer of this method, we can counteract delamination, repair peeling coatings, and restore the facade to its original condition.

FAQ

What is delamination and where does it occur?

Delamination is nothing more than detachment of a laminated layer. In the roof and facade sector, this mainly happens with older ”plastisol” plating or panels with a PVC coating. The sunny facades and roofs often suffer the most from this.

The cause of the loosening is actually mainly UV radiation. The plasticizers disappear from the PVC coating, making the coating brittle, hard and susceptible to cracking. Over time, it starts to loosen due to damage, scratches and the effects of moisture. The new series of plastisols have been greatly improved and delamination therefore occurs less often.

What risk do I run?

Delamination often starts with a small piece, but the consequences can often be severe over time. Coatings on entire facades or roofs can start to come loose and, due to weather influences, may even fall off completely. The underlying layers then become easy targets for deterioration and rust formation. Applying a new coating or replacing the cladding then becomes necessary.

Can this also be prevented?

Every coating system has a shelf life or lifespan. However, environmental factors such as location, UV exposure, and dirt load on roofs and facades greatly influence this ultimate lifespan. By conducting professional and periodic maintenance, delamination can often be limited or prevented.

Timely repainting of a roof or facade, as long as there is still adhesion from the old paint, can save significant costs. Additionally, it is essential to treat scratches and damage to the cladding promptly. Have your facade treated by us in a timely manner, as in many cases, the process can be halted, and high costs can be saved.

Feel free to call or email us for possibilities, whether the coating is already coming loose or not; we can provide a suitable solution in all cases!

Repainting or replacing?

The choice between repainting or replacing largely depends on the customer’s wishes. Repainting is often cheaper; however, renovating with a façade panel can also be a good and suitable solution.

When it comes to insulation panels, it is unfortunate that the panels need to be replaced because they have good insulating value and last a long time. It is more cost-effective and sustainable to apply a new coating or install a façade panel. Click on ‘renovation’ for more information.

In many cases, the problem immediately serves as an opportunity to refresh the entire building. You could also choose to equip the panels with new façade panels or profile cladding. We also restyle complete commercial buildings, including doors and window frames. Want more information? Click on ‘renovation’ again.
