Removing Rust Spots

Grinding dust, drill shavings, or screw fragments on cladding or panels can lead to rust formation. These rust spots can be quite persistent. When removing them—especially if not done in a timely manner—the underlying surface may be damaged or show cleaning marks. Timely cleaning is essential to prevent rust from spreading and affecting the materials.

Van Heemskerk has developed a special cleaning technique that does not involve scrubbing or mechanical processing. We can remove rust spots without causing damage or leaving cleaning marks. If the rust formation is severe, we can also repaint the affected areas. However, cleaning is usually sufficient.

We remove rust from panels of well-known cladding suppliers, such as Kingspan, Joris Ide, Falk, Cladding Point, Brucha, Rex Panels, Arcelor Mittal, etc. We are recognized and engaged by these manufacturers as a professional repairer of their products.

Do you see rust formation on your roof or facade panels? Would you like to know how to prevent rust? Please feel free to contact us!

Why from Heemskerk?

  • We have more than 20 years of experience in roof and façade panels, in new construction and renovation. We are often employed by well-known panel suppliers both domestically and abroad to remove rust spots and other special types of contamination.
  • We clean with neutral agents that do not damage the coatings. The iron particles that cause rust are removed without mechanical processing, so that rust remains gone and is not just masked.
  • We are advised by well-known panel suppliers, such as Falk, Kingspan, Joris Ide, SAB, Arcelor Mittal, Rex Panels, Cladding Point, Brucha, etc.
  • We are familiar with all types of panels, coatings, and profiles.
  • Through knowledge and experience, we always apply the right method for rust in combination with the applied coating.
  • We always have a suitable solution for you, whether it involves cleaning, repainting, or replacing. We carry out everything with our own team.

FAQ

Can I also remove the rust or grinding dust myself?

Sometimes it is possible, sometimes it is not. Removing rust is not easy; without vigorous scrubbing, you often don’t get very far. This mechanical scrubbing often has too much impact on the topcoat (it removes a layer) and this appears as spots or scratches. Also, the wrong products often cause more damage than they provide satisfactory results. This often leads to more damage, and parts may then need to be replaced or repainted.

Coated surfaces of profiles and panels are very sensitive to scrubbing and are not suitable for every chemical agent.

What are the risks of removal?

The risks are very low; however, there are risks with every project. We make an assessment in advance based on the nature of the contamination. Usually, we apply a test piece to minimize risks and ensure the right product is used. Based on our knowledge and experience, we know how to avoid several pitfalls and apply the correct technique. This can vary by project.

How long can rust typically remain?

The deterioration is closely related to the quality of the applied coating; some coatings are more resistant than others. It is advised to remove rust particles as soon as possible.

Preventive measures yield better results, so especially regularly wipe down horizontal surfaces when screws are used with sheet metal or panels. In humid weather, the likelihood of rust sticking is also greater. In practice, when working with steel roofs and façades, some minimal rust spots are really unavoidable, as everything is screwed together, and every building has some.

What if the rust cannot be removed now?

If rust remains on the surface for an extended period, it can eat through the topcoat and affect the underlying metal. This is a lengthy process. Most coatings can withstand some wear and tear. If cleaning does not help, repainting is a good option. Experience with projects shows that cleaning is often effective in many cases.

Can you also just wash and clean our building?

As a company, we are focused on specific types of contamination, such as rust and PUR residue or adhesive film residue. Because we have ongoing work in this area, we often have little or no manpower to offer ‘standard cleaning work’ alongside it. However, it may be possible for us to perform this work in combination. For any questions, you can always contact us.

My building has been cleaned with the wrong product and is damaged.

This phenomenon is quite common in the market, with cleaning companies applying the wrong products for the substrate or processing them incorrectly. This can lead to irreversible stains on façades or other coated materials such as window frames and doors.

At van Heemskerk, there is usually a solution for your problem, whether it involves cleaning, repainting, or even replacing. Inquire about the possibilities; send an email with photos and your question. We have successfully completed many of these ‘problem projects.’ We are also advised by suppliers of panels and cladding.

Who is the cause of the rust?

The difficult part is that rust only reveals itself after a long time; it can take several weeks before the speck is seen. It is hard to pinpoint who or what causes it. Prevention is better than cure, so work preventively, especially in humid weather. Some possible causes can be:

  • Screw fasteners from panels and sheet metal.
  • Grinding activities, such as threshold irons and steel mats.
  • Loading and unloading materials and iron-containing trailers.
  • Iron-rich surrounding terrain or being located next to railway tracks.
  • Advertising activities, installing solar panels on roof panels.
  • Installing window frames.
  • Drilling into the façade by installers.
